Along with speaking, reading, writing and listening, students need to
develop critical thinking skills. They must be able to research a topic and distinguish
among the sources when making a decision. There are many resources available about Evita
Perón. The controversy of her legacy in Argentina allows students to find information of
varying viewpoints. They must determine the bias of each resource and take that into
consideration when making their final decision. The oral discussion was incredible. I had
anticipated that students would discuss the induction of Ms. Perón in approximately half
a period (45 minutes) and then we would have a vote. Instead they spoke for 80 minutes. I
finally had to stop the discussion because class was almost over. Once the discussion
began it became obvious that the class was divided in half over her induction. They spoke
with passion and had a lot of fun. They argued and challenged each other with facts about
Evita's life. I sat outside the circle and watched. It was one of the best classes I have
ever had. It was exciting to see them speak with such enthusiasm.
