The unit on Evita Perón began with the viewing of two
documentaries. Next, students read parts of the script of the musical Evita in Spanish as
well as listened to parts of the recording in Spanish. These activities were followed up
with video clips from the movie Evita, starring Madonna.
These activities prepared students for the performance assessment
which was a WebQuest on Evita Perón. A WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented model that was
developed by Bernie Dodge, a professor of educational technology at San Diego State
University in 1995. WebQuests use the Internet as an integral part of teaching and are
based on Marzano's Dimensions of Learning Model.
The first activity in the WebQuest included doing another WebQuest
on "Fact or Fiction". This activity prepared the students for the rest of the
research. Students used critical thinking in order to determine the truth of the
information provided by a given source.
Next, students used the WebQuest, Evita Perón: Mistress to Madonna.
During the WebQuest, students researched Evita Perón's life by reading information from a
variety of web sites. These sites were selected because they depict how controversial Ms.
Perón was and how the information that exists is inconsistent.
The premise of the WebQuest is a fictitious scenario. It consists of
the following:
The International Association of Women (IAW) has decided to create a
Hall of Fame. Each year, countries will be able to submit the names of worthy candidates.
Only women who have made significant contributions to their country or the world in
general will be considered. This year, Argentina has submitted
Eva Duarte Perón as their candidate. After a preliminary
screening, Ms. Perón has been selected as a finalist. Only 20
of the 50 finalists will be inducted into the IAW Hall of Fame. The
students have been selected to serve on a committee that will research Ms. Perón's life
and make a recommendation to the IAW.
The performance assessments included preparing an outline of the
information gathered that justifies the group's decision, a written press release and a
video press release. Each group was required to present the decision to the other groups.
The class had to come to a consensus on whether Ms. Duarte will be inducted into the
International Women's Hall of Fame.
